During the press conference and announcement of the annual USMNT January Camp, Berhalter was asked about Richard's role going forward and what it means for his team. In response, the USA boss stated he's thrilled to see him earning regular minutes, but "long-term" he still views him as a defender.

"I think it's incredible that Chris is doing that and I think it shows how strong-willed he is. It says a lot about his character and his competitiveness that he steps in and fulfills roles for them and does quite well. Personally, I see him long-term still as a centerback, but to know that you could have potential depth in that position does help. He's playing in the Premier League as a central midfielder, so that's always a good thing!"
THE BIGGER PICTURE
Richards has been thrown into a defensive midfield position for Palace, starting in the role for eight-straight matches. He's flourished centrally for Roy Hodgson and co. in that spot, earning Man of the Match honors in early December while also receiving the accolades of his boss on multiple occasions.
