Jamaican striker on target yet againHemp caught the eye in battling winTight tussle at top of the tableGettyTELL ME MORE
Gareth Taylor’s side have been full of goals this season, with Golden Boot hopeful Bunny Shaw leading that charge, but they struggled to turn possession and pressure into end product during a visit to north London. The only effort of the first half came in the 10th minute when Lionesses winger Lauren Hemp drilled over a cross from the left that was turned past her own goalkeeper by unfortunate Spurs defender Amy Turner.
Tottenham thought they had equalised on the half-hour mark, but Martha Thomas – after racing through to produce a smart finish – was frustrated by the offside flag.
It took less than six minutes of the second half for City to double their lead, with Shaw getting her 13th league goal of the campaign. The Jamaican was teed up by a perfectly-weighted pass from Hemp that allowed her to crash a left-footed effort in at the near post.

City boast an abundance of attacking riches, with Lauren Hemp figuring prominently in that pack. Shaw may be getting the goals, with several hat-tricks to her name this season, but Hemp is proving to be a useful asset once again. She helped to pick the Spurs lock on a day where City dropped their keys at times, with the England forward forcing the opener as Turner put through her own net before pulling defenders towards her and teeing up Shaw for the effort which wrapped up three priceless points.
THE BIG LOSER
Tottenham defender Amy Turner does have four England caps to her name, but those international outings came way back in 2015. She has spent time with the likes of Manchester United and NWSL outfit Orlando Pride since then, but returned to her homeland in 2022. She endured an afternoon to forget against City having helped the visitors to a hard-fought win. After finding herself trying to deal with an early Hemp cross while facing her own goal, Turner was left sprawled on the turf with head in hands after bundling the ball over the line with her chest.
WHAT COMES NEXT?
City have closed back to within three points of table-topping Chelsea and will be in WSL action again when playing host to Leicester on February 4. Spurs, who sit in the middle of the pack, will be heading to Liverpool next weekend.
