Fabio Capello received a boost today as Wayne Rooney’s Euro ban was reduced from three games to two, in the hearing at Nyon this morning.
The Manchester United striker was facing up to the prospect of missing all of England’s group games at the Euros, after he was sent off for kicking out at Miodrag Dzudovic during the 2-2 draw with Montenegro back in October, but the FA’s successful appeal has ensured that Rooney will be eligible for the final group game against the joint hosts Ukraine.
The FA’s Adrian Bevington was delighted at the hearing and the resulting conclusion:
“We’ve had a very fair hearing.
“Wayne and Fabio are both very pleased. Wayne will head back to Manchester as a matter of priority.
“Wayne has always made clear that he accepted it was a red card offence.
“We arrived with the possibility of him missing the entire group phase – it would have been a huge challenge for Fabio and the team, so to have him available for the final group march against Ukraine is clearly very positive.” (BBC)
